Description
Informal physical activities in public spaces are becoming more important. Places such as parks, urban open spaces and natural environments enable diverse forms of physical activity, social interaction or everyday mobility, and shape the movement biographies of many different people.
To ensure equal participation, these spaces must be designed open for all and take diverse needs into account. Research in this area is multifaceted and benefits from interdisciplinary perspectives on space, physical activity and social participation.
The 17th annual conference of the dvs Commission on Sport and Space, held from March 12 to 13, 2026, at the Department of Sport Science and Sport at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, aimed to bring different perspectives on this topic together and to discuss current scientific approaches to informal settings for physical activity. This collection of abstracts comprises all contributions presented at the conference and provides insights into the broad field of public spaces for physical activity from various sport science perspectives.
