Description
As extracurricular places of learning, museums offer great potential for the integration of students from different cultures, as they enable cultural participation and intercultural exchange. Cultural history museums in particular offer a variety of different approaches to culture and language as well as the opportunity for new immigrants to contribute their own cultural and linguistic experiences to museum work and thus actively help shape it. However, museum education programs for recent immigrants are still rare in Germany and mainly found in art museums. Furthermore, the few existing programs have not been developed in an evidence-based manner. This gap is closed in the interdisciplinary dissertation project by interviewing experts from the fields of museum education, language didactics, history didactics, and teaching practice, and evaluating the interviews using the content-structuring qualitative content analysis according to Kuckartz/Rädiker (2022). The project explores how museum education programs for recently immigrated students between the ages of 14 and 17 can be designed to expand their cultural-historical and linguistic skills in a museum in a way that is appropriate for the target audience. The results of the evaluation will be used to create a catalog of criteria for the design of museum education programs for recently immigrated youths.
