In order to realize a compact bearing design with minimal friction losses but maximal reliability and wear resistance, it is helpful to determine the friction losses and the risk of wear due to axial oscillations. Therefore, this dissertation aims at analytically predicting these friction losses and determining the effects of axial oscillations on the formation of wear. Hence, the essential research activities in the field of rolling element bearings with oscillations are documented, two rolling bearing test rigs are presented, and common calculation models of friction losses and operating temperatures of rolling element bearings are discussed. This is followed by an experimental test program with axial oscillations of various amplitudes and frequencies applied to a cylindrical roller bearing NU 210, loaded with different speeds and radial loads, while lubricated with minimum quantity. Subsequently, an empirical calculation model of the friction losses and temperature rises is developed, and the wear behaviour is investigated. The knowledge gained supports design engineers in finding optimal designs for rolling element bearings with axial oscillations.
