In particular, the assumption that the surface roughness, which increases with wear, dampens these currents and thus enables an in-situ measurement of the wear condition. A new robust area-based parameter is introduced to quantify the surface roughness and its advantages over the commonly used line-based parameter are explained. In the electrical measurements, amplitude and, for the first time, phase of transmission of injected signals in the range up to 8.5 GHz are specifically considered. Impedance controlled lines (solid and stranded) as well as rudimentary conductors are analyzed in a specially developed measurement environment (\"measurement socket\").
