What is a utopia, when and where did it originate as a literary genre, which are its characteristics, how can it be distinguished from related genres \u2026 ?\nThese and other questions are themes of this book. Hinrich Hudde, Professor of Roman literature, has set himself the task to illuminate the genre of literary utopia from various perspectives and to present it in a wide way of looking at. Starting from Thomas Moore`s UTOPIA the author examines the conceptual and generic history in the interplay of utopia and dystopia, spatial and temporal utopias, delimits literary utopia from related genres, examines its relationship to art and media, assesses its inventory and surveys its occurrences in various languages. Another important theme is the relationship of utopia to its historical realities. This is followed by a look at the history of utopian research and finally he suggests further questions for research.\nThis work originated in the seventies of the last century.
